3 Powerful Lessons I’ve Learned as a Woman Entrepreneur
Share
By Candice Dormon, Founder of Ekow Body
When I walked into a local high school career fair last week, I didn’t expect to leave with such deep inspiration. I had the opportunity to speak with young people who weren’t just dreaming of being influencers—they were genuinely curious about building businesses from the ground up.
Their questions? Surprisingly serious. Thoughtful. And honestly, the kind of questions every new entrepreneur should ask.
I realized I’d never shared my answers to these questions here in the Ekow Body community, so I’m doing that today—for anyone dreaming about launching a woman-led business, starting something in wellness, or simply figuring out how to build something meaningful from scratch.
1. What’s the biggest challenge you face as an entrepreneur?
This is one of the most common questions I get now—and my answer is still the same:
Wearing all the hats.
When you’re starting a small business—especially one that's woman-owned—you are everything: the product developer, marketing team, customer service rep, and bookkeeper.
As a mom, wife, and founder of Ekow Body, I had to learn the hard way that trying to do it all doesn’t work long-term. The real challenge? Learning how to delegate, trust others, and grow sustainably.
If you’re building a wellness brand, skincare business, or any product-based company—know that this is part of the journey. And you’re not alone.
2. What is the most important skill to have to be a successful entrepreneur?
One word: resilience.
When you start a business, you will experience wins—and you will also face slow seasons, confusion, setbacks, and moments when you question everything.
What keeps you going is your why. For me, that’s always been about creating wellness products rooted in care, nourishment, and integrity. That purpose gives me the strength to show up again, even after something didn’t go as planned.
If you’re a woman launching a small business or stepping into entrepreneurship, the ability to bounce back and stay grounded will take you further than anything else.
3. How long did it take you to be profitable?
This is the big one. So many new entrepreneurs want to know:
When does it finally start to pay off?
My honest answer?
It took longer than I expected.
And that’s okay. Every business I’ve had—whether it was my childcare business, my consulting projects, or now Ekow Body—reached profitability at a different pace.
But I learned that profit isn’t the only way to measure growth. When I saw returning customers, glowing reviews, and a growing sense of community around the brand—that was also success.
If you’re a woman entrepreneur, especially building in the skincare or wellness space, don’t rush the process. Sustainable growth is still growth.
Final Thoughts
These questions from students reminded me:
💛 Asking the right questions is where real learning begins.
Whether you're 17 or 47, just starting out or years into your journey—these lessons are part of the reality of building a woman-led business in today’s world.
Thanks for being here with me. For believing in Ekow Body. And for choosing wellness that comes from a place of purpose.
