Movement, Together

Movement, Together

Movement, together, is a building block of community.

It gives us something to do alongside one another. A reason to laugh, try something new, learn from each other, and sometimes meet someone we might not have met otherwise.

This summer, I joined the Edgewood Park Block Party in New Haven to bring Soul Line Dance to the neighborhood—and because I rarely go anywhere these days without a bundle of staffs, I brought Arc Flow along too.

I arrived early, pulled out the staffs, and invited people to play. Kids and adults picked them up to explore movement, coordination, balance, and flow. Later, we traded the staffs for music and came together for line dancing.

The Arts Paper captured a little of the afternoon:

“Beneath the overcast sky, Candice Dormon readied her stance, holding wooden batons in the air.”

They described me as “bringing the sunshine with her,” which feels like a pretty lovely description of what I hope movement can bring into a space.

Ekow Body brings Arc Flow, Soul Line Dance and accessible movement into schools, community organizations, health and wellness initiatives, and special events.

Because sometimes building community looks like gathering around a table...

And sometimes it looks like picking up a flow staff or learning a dance together.
